Bathroom Remodel
Cost & Investment Guide
One of the most common questions when planning a bathroom remodel is, “How much will it cost?” The answer depends on the bathroom itself and what you hope to change. A simple powder room and a completely reworked primary bath are very different projects. Below, we’ll walk through some of the biggest factors that influence cost so you can better understand what goes into your bathroom investment.
Three Things Determine Cost in a Bathroom Remodel
-
Size
-
Scope
-
Finishes
The size and type of bathroom play an important role in determining cost. A powder room has very different needs than a full bathroom or larger primary bath, particularly when it comes to tile, plumbing, cabinetry, and fixtures.
Keeping your existing layout generally requires a different level of investment than relocating plumbing, enlarging a shower, removing a tub, moving walls, or completely rethinking the space.
Tile, cabinetry, countertops, plumbing fixtures, shower glass, lighting, and other selections can have a significant impact on the final investment. There is a wide range of options at nearly every price point.
Realistic Investment Ranges:
Powder Room - $10,000 - $15,000+
Full Bathroom - $20,000 - $50,000+
Primary Bathroom - $25,000 - $70,000+
Where Does Your Investment Go?
Cabinetry, Countertops
& Fixtures
$3,000 - $10,000+
From the vanity you use every day to linen cabinetry and added storage, cabinetry plays an important role in both the function and design of your bathroom. This portion of your investment can also include countertops, sink(s), faucet(s), and the finishing details that bring the vanity area together.
Tile & Shower
$8,000 - $20,000+
Tile can be one of the most variable parts of a bathroom remodel, both in material cost and in how much is used throughout the space. It may be limited to the bathroom floor and shower, or continue up walls, behind mirrors and vanities, around a tub, or as wainscoting throughout the room. This portion of your investment can also include shower waterproofing, niches and benches, shower bases, thresholds, and glass enclosures. The tile itself can range considerably in price, and the size, pattern, layout, and amount of tile all affect installation costs as well.
Plumbing & Electrical
Plumbing and electrical needs can vary depending on how much your bathroom layout is changing and what new features are being added. This can include relocating or updating plumbing for sinks, toilets, tubs and showers, as well as installing shower fixtures and other connections. Electrical work may include new or relocated lighting, outlets, switches, exhaust fans, and other electrical needs required for the finished space. Keeping existing locations can help control costs, while moving plumbing or adding new electrical features can increase the scope of work.
$2,000 - $10,000+
Design, Planning
& Installation
$5,000 - $25,000+
A bathroom remodel involves much more than installing a vanity and tile. Demolition, preparation, waterproofing, installation, project coordination, finish work, and problem-solving all require skilled craftsmanship. With so many elements coming together in a relatively small space, the work behind the scenes makes up a significant portion of your investment.
Fixtures & Finishing Details
$1,000 - $5,000+
This portion of your investment includes the fixtures and finishing touches that complete the bathroom, such as toilets, shower heads and handhelds, shower controls, tub fillers, mirrors or medicine cabinets, towel bars, toilet paper holders, robe hooks, and other bathroom accessories. These selections can range from simple and functional to highly customized, and while some may seem like smaller details, they can add up quickly throughout the space.
